Grid vs solid land drain end caps — which do you need?
28 September 2026 · The Shape Shop

Grid end caps let water leave while screening debris; solid plugs blank the pipe off. Pick by the job at the open end — and check fit, because pipe sizes differ by brand.
An unfinished land-drain run almost always has at least one open end. That end either needs to stay open so water can leave, or it needs blanking off. The fitting you push on decides which.
Leave it bare and soil, stones and trench fill work into the pipe. Fit the wrong style of cap and you either block a weep you wanted, or leave open an end that should stay closed. This guide separates grated grid end caps from solid stopper plugs in plain English.
For pipe size choice (60 vs 80 vs 100mm), see land drain sizes: 60mm, 80mm or 100mm?. For exposed outlets where water must leave into a ditch, stream, sewer connection or another land drain, see anti-return end caps for land drain outlets.
Grid vs solid — which job?
Use a grated (grid) end cap when the pipe end still needs to pass water, while you want to help keep stones and debris out. The face is grated: water can flow; larger rubbish is screened. Typical jobs are a short stub that weeps into gravel, or a buried end where a solid blank would trap water against the fitting.
Use a solid stopper plug when that end should be blanked off. Upstream dead ends on a herringbone, the high end of an interceptor, and any stub you do not want taking trench fill all belong on a solid cap.
Neither product is foul drainage. Both are plastic fittings for perforated land drain, made in the United Kingdom.
Quick compare
- Grid — water can still leave; face is screened
- Solid — blanks the end off completely
- Anti-return — for exposed outlet ends (separate product — see that guide)
Both grid and solid packs are packs of two. Grid covers 60, 80 and 100mm pipe. Solid covers 50, 60, 80 and 100mm. Leave full size tables on the product pages.
Sizing and fit — check before you order
The listing options name the plug and the pipe it fits. Buy the option that matches the millimetres on your coil:
- 51.1mm plug → 60mm pipe
- 68mm plug → 80mm pipe
- 84.7mm plug → 100mm pipe
- 42.7mm plug (solid pack only) → 50mm pipe
Internal pipe sizes differ by brand. Measure your pipe or check the product size notes and check fit before ordering. Shape Shop will release outside-diameter (OD) fittings soon for wider compatibility — no launch date or SKUs yet.

- Solid end caps — pack of 2 (50–100mm) — blanks the end off
Cap buried upstream dead ends with grid or solid to match whether that end must pass water. For an exposed outlet end, use the anti-return end cap instead. Add geotextile and gravel so most soil never reaches the pipe in the first place. A silt trap catches grit already in the flow.
Frequently asked questions
- When should I use a grid end cap instead of a solid one?
- Use a grated grid when the open end still needs to pass water — for example a short stub that can weep into gravel — while you want to help keep stones and debris from entering the pipe. Use a solid stopper when you want that end blanked off completely.
- Why do the size options say 51.1mm, 68mm or 84.7mm?
- Those numbers are the plug, not the pipe you buy on the coil. Order by the pipe size: 51.1mm plug for 60mm pipe, 68mm for 80mm, 84.7mm for 100mm. Solid caps also offer a 42.7mm plug for 50mm pipe. Pipe sizes differ by brand — check fit before ordering.
- Do grid and solid caps come in the same sizes?
- Grid caps cover 60mm, 80mm and 100mm pipe. Solid stopper plugs cover 50mm, 60mm, 80mm and 100mm. Both are packs of two.
- Is a grid end cap the same as an anti-return end cap?
- No. A grid is grated so water can still flow. A solid plug blanks the end. An anti-return end cap is for exposed outlet ends where water must leave the pipe — it closes the end and helps keep soil and debris from working back in. It is not a hydraulic check valve. See the anti-return guide for that job.
- Can I leave a land-drain end open with nothing on it?
- You can, but open ends let soil, stones and trench fill work into the pipe. Cap buried upstream dead ends with grid or solid. Use an anti-return on exposed outlets.
- Are these caps for foul drainage?
- No. Both the grid and solid packs are for perforated land drain pipe in a garden French drain. They are not underground drainage fittings for foul or soil pipe.
